The Brothers of Nu Tau Chapter joined and supported the Capital
District YMCA (CDYMCA), which is overseen by a fellow Nu Tau chapter member –
Brother David Brown, CDYMCA President and CEO, along with the support of
Brother Gary Guy, Capital District Transportation Authority (CDTA) Director of
Transportation. Brother Leroy Twiggs enthusiastically served as the Grand
Marshal of the African Heritage Parade.
Launched in 2019 and held over Juneteenth Weekend, the CDYMCA African Heritage Parade celebrates the African Diaspora in the United States with a parade in downtown Albany. This parade leads into Albany's 3rd Annual Juneteenth Celebration and Festival. The parade began at Washington Park and ended at Madison Avenue and S. Pearl Street.
Marching included many of the region’s key Divine 9 and
other African Diaspora organizations, elected officials, and leaders. People of the African Diaspora are global and dynamic,
representing many nationalities, cultures, and languages. The parade celebrates diversity, history, and strength.
Another great highlight of this great day, CDYMCA and
numerous community participants and spectators to a moment to celebrate and
formally honor Brother Leroy Twiggs for his exemplary work ethic, community
service, entrepreneurship, and leadership/mentorship (i.e., HSBC).
For those that do not know, the first black-owned and
operated McDonald’s franchise at two separate major locations in downtown
Albany, NY. The locations were State Street and Pearl Street, which was then
moved to a new facility (and branding) at Madison Avenue and S. Pearl Street.
Both locations were owned by a fellow Omega man, Brother Leroy Twiggs.
Brother Twiggs was initiated into the Omega fold on 12/8/61,
Omicron Epsilon at Bethune-Cookman University. Brother Twiggs continues to
remain active, financial, and supportive of the Nu Tau chapter.
Honoring Brother Twiggs and celebrating/supporting CDYMCA African
Heritage Parade, along with the kick-off of Juneteenth festivities was a great
ending for the organizations and community supporters.
As always, Nu Tau – Sets the Pace!
